Would you save the life of an animal if you could? There are literally millions of cats who need a good home. It only takes some knowledge and commitment to care for a cat. Read here about how to approach the process properly.
If you are planning to get a pet cat, be sure to check with your local shelter. Many shelters are overcrowded with lovable and adoptable cats. Adopting your cat at a shelter allows you to save a cat’s life while also helping mitigate overpopulation.
Take your cat in for regular vet exams. Your cat requires a variety of vaccines and shots to prevent illness, and it is also important to identify health problems before they become too severe. If you find a vet you are comfortable with, use them for the duration of your cat’s life. That way, the doctor will be familiar with the history of your cat.
Lessen the chances of your cat becoming harmed or killed by spraying all electric cords with something to keep them from chewing it. Bitter apple is a good choice and can be found at most pet stores. If your cat is especially intent on chewing cords, keep them covered as much as possible. Loose cords can be bundled and tucked inside old paper towel rolls. Store electronics when they are not in use rather than leaving them plugged in.
Cats are partially nocturnal. The result is that cats prefer to be more active during the night. Close the door to prevent the noise from getting to you. This will ensure you sleep much better, without cats jumping into bed with you.
Your cat probably spends a lot of time grooming himself to perfection. When your cat has long hair, this can cause hairballs. There is a special food on the market that does help out with hairball issues. Some cat food brands have formulations to prevent or reduce hairballs, which will make life easier for your cat and you.
Try and figure out why kitty is meowing. After living with your cat for long, it’s easier to interpret its meows. Maybe she wants to go out, or maybe she wants to eat. By giving her the proper amount of attention you can better attend to her needs.
If the cats scratching post is looking tired and worn out, never throw it away. This is the condition that cats most appreciate. Cats may well try scratching something else entirely (like your furniture!) if you replace their beloved toy with something unfamiliar.
Consider buying your cat a special drinking fountain. Cats that live in the wild like drinking from running water, and they have the same desires in a home. Streaming water is your best bet. Many cats prefer running water over their water dish. Drinking fountains are more environmentally-friendly and they let your cat drink naturally.
If possible, always choose canned cat food. Dry foods are cheaper but canned foods are richer in vitamins and nutrients. That’s because this type of food provides your cat with more protein, good fat and water. For aging cats, it is also easier to chew. You should ask your vet for some recommendations if you are not sure what kind of food to get.
Don’t bring home a cat with long hair without taking into account the extra care they’ll require. Silky, long hair can be stunning, but that fur won’t look as pretty when it’s on your sofa, clothes, and carpet. Unless you are prepared to do more cleaning, don’t buy a long haired cat. It should also be noted that long haired cats are much more susceptible to hairballs.
You should be proud that you are giving love to a cat. You are sharing your home with an animal that really needs your love. This will most certainly cause a strong bond to form, lasting even longer than the animal is alive. Take good care of your cat and cherish the time you spend together.
